Founded in 2007, Inside Climate News is the oldest and largest dedicated climate newsroom in the nation. We are nonprofit and non-partisan and exist to publish essential reporting, investigation, and analysis about the biggest crisis facing our planet. We watchdog government, industry and advocates and hold them accountable for their policies and actions. We counter misinformation, hold polluters responsible, expose environmental injustice and scrutinize solutions. We have earned many of the most prestigious awards<\/a> in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our newsroom maintains a focus on environmental injustice, consistently examining how climate change disproportionately burdens communities of color and vulnerable populations. Through our fellowship program<\/a>, we also provide hands-on newsroom experience for emerging reporters wanting to specialize in climate, environment and justice reporting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rely wholly on grants from philanthropies and donations from individuals to pay for operations. We are a 501(c)3 public charity and make our work available without a paywall to ensure that anyone can read it, wherever they are. We also provide our stories to media partners for free to sustain the practice of environmental journalism, support local newsrooms and improve public understanding of science, health and the environment in communities across the nation, through ICN Local<\/a>.

Inside Climate News is a not-for-profit incorporated in the state of New York and a 501 C3 tax-exempt organization operating as a public charity. It is governed by a Board of Directors and guided by the best practices of non-profit management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are supported primarily by grants for general support from charitable foundations and tax deductible donations from our readers. An independent audit of our 2019 fiscal year determined that 84 percent of our budget was used for program-related expenses: to pay staff and contributors to report, write, illustrate and edit articles; for travel; and for web development. The rest was divided almost evenly between fundraising and management expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donors who support our award-winning environmental journalism do not have any involvement in or access to our editorial process or decision-making. Our EIN is 56-2451141. Our former name was Lost Light Projects Inc. dba InsideClimate News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
